Merchant Navy Courses after 10th and 12th Courses:
GENERAL PURPOSE RATING- COURSE(G.P)APPROVED BY D.G SHIPPING
Are you planning to do Merchant Navy after 10th General Purpose Ratings are the trainees on board merchant ship who undergoes short training program which is generally designed in 2 phases (Pre-sea & On Sea training).They are trained to work in both the departments Deck and Engine and that is the reason they are called General Purpose. Ratings can be a part of deck or engine room assisting the officers and engineers for the deck and engine operations. After the completion of pre sea training the seaman can decide that whether he wants to be a part of deck or engine team. Eventually they become the certified watch keeper in deck or engine room. Ratings once complete 36 months of sea time can also undergo post sea course and qualify examination in India and become deck or engineer officer, but for that a lot of hard work and determination is required from their end.
12th with PCM / Commerce 45% is compulsory There are huge employment opportunities in this field. Candidates who have finished the basic course in merchant navy can get jobs very easily through various consultants and placement agencies. Merchant navy fleet consists of cargo ships, container ships, barge carrying ships, tankers, bulk carriers, refrigerators ships, passenger ships, as well as roll off/roll on ships. The possibility of finding employment in cargo ships is more as compared to the others. 10th pass with minimum 40% in Maths and Science.
Minimum 50% marks in English at 10+2 or 10th level is a must.
AGE LIMIT: Not exceeding 25 years on the date of commencement of training.(5 Years relaxation for SC/ST candidates)
MEDICAL FITNESS: Eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness and medically fit as per Directorate General of Shipping.
Qualify written and interview test conducted by Institute.
Clear Medical examination by D.G shipping approved Doctor.
AFTER SELECTION COURSE STRUCTURE IS MENTIONED BELOW:
Pre Sea Training of 6 Months (Awarded certificate of pre sea training approved by D.G Shipping).
On board Training of 9 months (Trainee seaman will get stipend of USD 200-400 Per Month while training onboard)Awarded watch keeping certificate for Engine or Deck from DG Shipping on successful completion of required courses and exams.
Commencement of Course: In month of January & July every Year.
Sponsorship Requirement: This course is generally non sponsored and various shipping companies come in the campus of the institute for recruiting Trainee seaman. It’s good to see the previous campus records of the institute which gives a fair idea that which all companies come to the campus for selection. Senior School Certificate/ Higher Secondary Examination/ Class XII/ 10+2 from a recognized Board/ University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with not less than 65% marks in PCM and 60% aggregate Note: Students awaiting final result can also apply
B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 60% marks in the final year, from a recognized University provided that the candidate must have passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized Board : [10+2 PCM > 60%]

English: Should have obtained not less than 60% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree course conducted by a recognized Board/ University
Age Limit: Minimum age should be 17 years and maximum age should not exceed 25 years on the date of commencement of course (Course commences in February and August every year)
Physical and Medical Standards:Physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines, 6/6 eyesight without visual aids and no colour blindness
IMU CET:Should qualify IMU CET for the respective batch
DNS is a Sponsored Course. Students can apply even before appearing for IMU CET to obtain Company sponsorship.
